"Connections and Why They Matter"
Most of what happens in our life will spark a connection. Life connects with what has been found in books. Books connect with what happens in life. Use the connections to help you see more clearly. A love of reading and writing is what motivated the creation of this blog. Thank you for coming to the blog.
There’s a quiet truth in the phrase We are the sum of small moments. It brings focus, but also unease.
The significant events of our past- the milestones, the heartbreaks, the triumphs—change in importance over time. What once felt defining starts to blur at the edges, while the small, ordinary moments take on new weight.
We remember a kind word said when we needed it most. A walk shared with a friend who is no longer here. A silence that felt like understanding.
Friends often come into our lives for a reason, and when they leave, their absence echoes. Even the ones we believed would always stay sometimes drift away. And when we turn to family, those who can’t leave, they might not understand why we still carry those absences so closely.
But the small moments, they remain. They are not about who we are supposed to be, or what we’ve achieved. They are about what is real, the flashes of connection and truth that define us quietly, from the inside out.
Maybe being the sum of small moments means learning to see them as enough.
The Sum of Small Moments
by Brent M. Jones
We are the sum of small moments, a thought that steadies and unsettles.
The larger things fade, their importance shifting as time rearranges what we thought mattered.
Friends enter our lives, sometimes for years, sometimes only for a season.
And when they go, we feel the hollow shape they leave behind.
Even those we once believed would always be there can become distant echoes of another time.
Family remains, rooted in the same history, yet sometimes puzzled by what we cannot let go.
They tell us not to dwell on what has already changed.
Perhaps they are right.
And yet...
the small moments remain.
A conversation. A kindness. A hand held. A door opened. A goodbye we did not know would be the last.
These are the things memory chooses to keep.
Not the years themselves, but fragments of them.
Small moments that seemed ordinary until time revealed they were anything but.
Perhaps we do not remember a life as a whole.
Perhaps, in the end, we remember the moments that made it ours.
This poem also appears in my What Matters Substack, alongside the short essay on friendship, loss, and the quiet meaning found in ordinary days.
I wrote this poem to explore how letting go of overthinking can lead to clarity. Too often, we try to control every thought, every answer, when in truth, peace usually comes when we stop trying so hard.
Thoughts Are Like Leaves is a reflection on quieting the mind and allowing space for something deeper to emerge.
Thoughts are like leaves Drifting, catching the light, falling when they’re ready.
We try so hard to control what we think, say, or do. But what if we let go just a little?
When we stop grasping for meaning, we often find it. When we stop forcing clarity, it arrives.
Let the last thought go. Let the leaf fall. And see what the wind carries back
