"Connections and Why They Matter"
Most of what happens in our life will spark a connection. Life connects with what has been found in books. Books connect with what happens in life. Use the connections to help you see more clearly. A love of reading and writing is what motivated the creation of this blog. Thank you for coming to the blog.
In communication, tone of voice plays a critical role in how messages are understood. Research suggests that tone alone accounts for nearly 38% of the meaning conveyed, while the actual words we use contribute only about 7%. This highlights an important truth: it’s not just what we say, but how we say it, that shapes understanding.
The 7-38-55 Rule
Psychologist Albert Mehrabian developed what is now known as the 7-38-55 Rule to explain how people interpret meaning in situations that involve emotions or attitudes. According to his findings:
7% of meaning comes from the words themselves.
38% comes from tone of voice.
55% comes from nonverbal cues such as body language and facial expressions.
This rule is often cited as a reminder that communication goes far beyond vocabulary. A message spoken warmly can inspire trust and connection, while the same words delivered with a harsh tone or closed-off posture may create distance or conflict.
Why It Matters
While Mehrabian’s research applies specifically to emotional or attitude-based communication—not all types of conversation—it illustrates the importance of aligning our words, tone, and body language. When these elements work together, communication feels authentic and trustworthy. When they clash, the message becomes confusing or even misleading.
