Suppose you have put much thought into the question of “what is your most important skill” when considering a job interview or even an interview for an award or particular class. In that case, you are probably a little skeptical that there is such a thing as one skill that is usually evident when someone is picked as the best choice.

Before discussing that skill, let’s look at a list of skills that can easily be found when researching this question.

Things to consider for your interview:

  1. Study the Job Posting

  2. Prepare a list of relevant questions about the job and the company.

  3. Restate your interest in the position.

  4. Summarize why you're the one for the job.

  5. Find out the next steps in the hiring process

  6. Send thank-you emails and connection requests with thank-you notes on LinkedIn

  7. Polish your interviewing skills.

  8. Do your background research on the company.

  9. Be polite to everyone.

  10. Watch your body language.

  11. Review your resume and show that it reflects the job posting

  12. Prepare for standard questions.

  13. Prepare your clothes (Appropriate, clean, ironed)

  14. Prepare your questions about the job and company.

Your passion and enthusiasm are skills, but they must communicate authentically. The candidate for a job that shares genuine passion and enthusiasm for a job and company, in most cases, is the one that will get the job. Even when the interviewers tell themselves that they have made the decision based on other criteria, passion and enthusiasm likely influenced their decision.

This means that you, the interviewee, must consider this when you pick your career direction. The good news is that it will give you a significant advantage in achieving success.

How do you know what it is that you are passionate about? Being able to answer this question as to what matters the most to you is critical to understanding what it is that you are passionate about.

"Be passionate about improving. Be passionate about helping others. Listen to your feelings.”
