Introduction

Books are a testament to human thought, creativity, and knowledge. Each year, millions of new titles are added to the world's literary collection, reflecting the endless curiosity and storytelling spirit of humanity. But just how many books exist today? And how many are published each year?

How Many Books Are Published Each Year?

The world of books is vast and ever-expanding. Each year, an estimate of the number of books published yearly, including self-published and traditionally published books, is estimated to be between 3 million and 4 million, according to Google

Self-published books: In 2021, 2.3 million were self-published in the US.

Traditionally published books: An industry estimate is that 500,000 to 1 million new titles are published each year through a traditional publisher

In 2010, Google counted 129,864,880 unique books in the world since the invention of Gutenberg's printing press in 1440

Google estimates that there are 158,464,880 unique books worldwide as of 2023.

Closing Thoughts

The Rise of BookTok: What It Means for Readers, Writers, and Publishers →

August 7, 2024 Brent Jones
Book Lover Information RSS

What Is BookTok? A Revolution in Reading

BookTok is a vibrant subcommunity on TikTok dedicated to books and literature. It brings together readers, authors, and creators who share a deep love of storytelling—expressed through short, engaging videos. Known as BookTokers, these creators post everything from heartfelt reviews and book hauls to comedic skits about reading habits and literary tropes.

The Impact of BookTok on Publishing

BookTok has become one of the most influential forces in the modern publishing world. A single viral video can catapult a little-known book into bestseller territory. Genres like young adult fiction, fantasy, and romance have especially benefited, with certain titles seeing dramatic spikes in sales after being featured on the platform.

Publishers have taken notice. Many now monitor BookTok trends closely and even incorporate BookTok creators into their marketing strategies. In some cases, they reprint older titles simply because of renewed interest sparked by the community.

TikTok’s Algorithm and the Rise of BookTok

In a conversation with TED’s Chris Anderson, TikTok CEO Shou Chew explained that TikTok’s algorithm focuses less on who users follow and more on what they enjoy. It learns through user behavior—watch time, replays, likes—not just social connections.

This model has allowed interest-based communities like BookTok to flourish. Chew emphasized TikTok’s mission to “inspire creativity and build community,” and BookTok is a perfect example. Whether a reader is into dark academia, cozy romance, or literary fiction, the algorithm serves them content tailored to their tastes—helping even niche genres and indie authors gain exposure.

Why BookTok Matters for Readers and Writers

BookTok isn’t just a trend—it’s a cultural shift in how people discover and talk about books. It has introduced millions of new readers to authors they may never have encountered otherwise. It has revived interest in classics, fueled reprints of out-of-print novels, and turned passionate readers into digital influencers.

For writers, especially self-published or lesser-known ones, BookTok represents a democratized path to visibility. For readers, it creates a sense of community, authenticity, and excitement around books. And for the publishing industry, it’s become impossible to ignore.

In short: BookTok has made reading social, spontaneous, and deeply personal again—and its influence is only growing.
